PROYECTO INMISCUIR was an art-life project between myself and Daniel Coleman (foremerly know as Daniel B. Chavez).  We met in 2011 through our associations with the transnational performance collective La Pocha Nostra, which we both integrated for some years, and began accompannying one another from an artistic and affective place within both art & life projects. Proyecto Inmiscuir was born from this ongoing relationship, officially taking shape as a independent duet art-life performance based between Barcelona (ES) and San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas (MX) between 2015-2017.

Through transfeminism & decolonial practices, live & mediated performance, critical thought, political activism and performance pedagogy, Proyecto Inmiscuir worked through and with issues such as:

• intersectional & interactional politics & alliances that take into account race, ethnicity, nationality, migration, class, differently abled bodies, size, and age differences
• trans* politics and embodiments
• separating wellness from privilege (families of choice, queer affects, communities of care, health and reproductive choices and rights, spiritual/physical/emotional health, radical rest)
• transcultural dialogues (speaking to different discourses & communities through multilingual approaches as well as body & aesthetic languages)
• embodied praxis (erasing Cartesian dualisms and valuing knowledge produced through experience)
• working on the borders between independent & activist spaces and artistic & educational institutions (not rejecting institutional benefits and support altogether but maintaining a critical perspective on their limitations with regards to artistic & intellectual censorship and other conservative capitalist and neoliberal agendas that benefit from “inclusion” and “diversity” without being committed to social change)
• ethical and interpersonal challenges, (in)coherences and contradictions

Why the name Proyecto Inmiscuir?

INMISCUIR definition from the Real Academy of Spanish:

•    To put one substance into another so it results in a mix
•    To meddle in something or take part in a dealing or a business, especially when there is no reason or authority for doing so.

Since our relationship was born of what ‘could not be’ that then extended into years of queer accompaniments, during the period that we merged lives also as a romantic couple we found ourselves using the word Inmiscuir as a metaphor that could expand the different ways we worked in and with dissident belongings.

OUR re-signification/chosen definition:

•  the undertaking of affective and relational mixtures between two people, their backgrounds and their chosen families.
•  the creation of a mixture of physical and emotional spaces from a cuir sensibility, from the prohibited, from the erotic-affective, and the creative.
•  the creation of non-existent referents for the construction of creative quotidian practices that allow us to challenge normative ways of being in the world.
•  the metaphorical and literal action of erasing the difference between performance time and quotidian time as a political act of vital energy.

*A note about cuir: the word cuir is a Latin American appropriation of the word “queer” originally coined in the Anglosaxon context to describe political and social struggles of LGBTQ people in North America. Naming our project with a title that contains the word ‘cuir’ within it, we were interested in implicating ourselves in discourses and practices that continue to question and expand queer/cuir politics for uses that are not North American-centric as a way of doing critical LGBTQ politics from the South.

Origen del proyecto:

PROYECTO INMISCUIR fué un proyecto de arte-vida que cree junto a Daniel Coleman (previamente Daniel B. Chavez). Nos conocimos en 2011 a través de nuestras asociaciones con el colectivo transnacional de perfromance La Pocha Nostra, que ambes integramos por algunos años,  y empezamos a acompañarnos desde un lugar artístico afectivo dentro de proyectos tanto de arte como de vida. Proyecto Inmiscuir nació de esta relación, oficialmente tomando forma como un proyecto dueto arte-vida atonomo basado entre Barcelona (ES) y San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas (MX) entre 2015-17.

A través de la creación de performances en vivo, producciónes audio-visuales, pensamiento crítico, activismo político y performance-pedagogía, Proyecto Inmiscuir trabajó desde una perspectiva transfeminista y decolonial, indagando acerca de temas como:

• políticas y alianzas interseccionales y interaccionales que toman en cuenta: raza, etnicidad, nacionalidad, migración, clase, diversidad funcional y diferencias generacionales
• políticas y corporalidades trans*
• la separación del bienestar y del privilegio (familia por opción, afectos cuirs, comunidades de cuidado, salud y decisiones/derechos de reproducción, salud espiritual/físico/emocional, descanso radical)
• diálogos transculturales (la utilización de distintas lenguas y lenguajes, incluyendo los estéticos y corporales, para acercarnos a distintos discursos y comunidades)
• praxis encarnada (borrar dualismos Cartesianos y valorar conocimiento producido por la experiencia)
• trabajar en los intersticios y fronteras entre espacios independientes-activistas y instituciones artísticas y educativas (no rechazar por completo el apoyo y beneficios de instituciones pero mantener una perspectiva crítica de sus limitaciones en torno a la censura artística e intelectual y otras agendas capitalistas neoliberales conservadoras que se benefician de “la inclusión” y “diversidad” sin un compromiso al cambio social)
• desafíos, (in)coerencias y contradiciones éticas y interpersonales

¿Por qué el nombre Proyecto Inmiscuir?

IMISCUIR, Definición de la Real Academia española:

• Poner una sustancia en otra para que resulte una mezcla.
• Entrometerse, tomar parte en un asunto o negocio, especialmente cuando no hay razón o autoridad para ello.

Nuestra relación empezó como algo que ‘no podia ser’ y desde entonces se extendió a varios años de acompañamiento cuir. Durante el periodo que juntamos vidas también como pareja romantica, decidimos usar el término Inmiscuir como metáfora en la que pudimos seguir pensando y trabajando distintas cuestiones acerca de nuestras pertenencias disidentes.

Nuestra re-significación/definición escogida del término Inmiscuir:

• la realización de mezclas afectivas y relacionales entre dos personas y sus familias escogidas.
• la creación de una mezcla de espacios físicos y emocionales desde una sensibilidad cuir, desde lo prohibido, lo erótico-afectivo y lo creativa
• la fabricación de referentes no-existentes para la construcción de prácticas
• cotidianas-creativas que nos permiten desafiar maneras normativas de estar en el mundo.
• la acción metafórica y literal de borrar la diferencia entre el tiempo de performance y el tiempo cotidiano como un acto político de energía vital.

* una nota sobre cuir: la palabra cuir es un apropriación latinoamericana de la palabra “queer”, originalmente acuñada en el contexto anglosajón para describir las luchas políticas y sociales de comunidades LGBTQ en Norteamérica. Al nombrar nuestro proyecto con una palabra que lleva ‘cuir’ en su interior, nos interesa implicarnos en discursos y prácticas que siguen cuestionando y expandiendo políticas queer/cuir para usos no-norteamericanos, como una  manera de hacer política LGBTQ crítica desde el sur.
