(I never imagined myself writing a book. And yet, here I am — about to release ABSCISSION into the world!!! Life really unfolds in mysterious ways….)
ABSCISSION is an artist book that brings together performance, ritual image and poetic eco-philosophy to ask what we might need to let go of within the bodies and stories we inhabit, and how releasing the body-world as we know it can reattune us to the larger metabolic cycles of life. Inspired by the technology of abscission — by which plants and other species release parts of themselves to survive and renew life — I draw on my experiences of hysterectomy and non-binary mastectomy to explore more-than-human reciprocity. In times of extraction and extinction, this book is an invitation to collective transition, moving from overwhelm towards wonder, held by radical tenderness.
At the heart of this inquiry is an embodied awareness of how boundaries between body and earth, self and other, organism and environment, living and non-living are much more permeable than binary narratives of the world make it seem. The book calls us to inhabit these relationships differently: to listen beyond the authority of the human, to make space for the unknown and the unknowable, to attend to the wider metabolism in which our bodies participate, and to cultivate forms of coexistence that do not depend on permanence, purity, or control.
Praise for the book:
Dani d’Emilia’s ABSCISSION project queerly activates new ways of thinking about being that remind us that humans are part (not the opposite) of nature, destined to shed skin and to die. Through vivid photographs and theoretical texts, this book engages the energies of abscission—slicing away and letting go of parts of the body in order to survive—cutting into assumptions about what constitutes human life and death and opening the human to mutability and otherness.
Amelia Jones — Art Historian, Curator, and Performance Theorist
In ABSCISSION Dani d’Emilia writes ‘My body is just an extension of the body of the Land and the Cosmos, just as yours is.’ This goes to the heart of an extraordinary body of work, captured in this stunning book. It is a reframing of a body in its relation to art, ecology and identity; a study of a body as a process of transformation and transition; and a representation of a body as a site where art meets life and life meets art.
Lois Keidan — Co-Founder and Former Director of the Live Art Development Agency, London
Dani d’Emilia loosens the weight of static forms in order to inhabit thought as living matter. Like leaves that detach at the right moment, the work refuses the ties that demand unsustainable permanence. After all, we are flexible, changing bodies, shaped by the courage to let go of what has already completed its cycle. Between cuts and listening, existence is a continuous exercise in reimagining: the quiet art of metabolising loss in order to allow the common to germinate.

(Nunca imaginei que escreveria um livro. E, no entanto, cá estou — prestes a soltar ABSCISSION no mundo!!! A vida realmente segue caminhos misteriosos …)
